Heliotropes [interiors]

Nightshade I, 19"x19", Photograph,
Pigmented ink on canvas, 2005

When Matt showed me his photographs of 95 Marsfield Gardens I was struck my their brightness as my own memory of visiting this place was dark and repressive. I asked Matt where the first image in the series was shot he said, "Somewhere between Marx's tomb [in Highgate] and the Freud residence". Matt's sequence is intriguing: from the bottom of the stairway up to the top of the landing and beyond to the window in the room with the dark furniture -- redolent wood/ effulgent light (Heliotrope III). Downstairs, circular light in door, upstairs rectangular light in a dark room (Heliotrope IX, VII, VIII). There is no approach, neither forward or backward: the image is just fixed there, in the dark, looking at the light - the house's internal structure. - Gus B. - Gus B.
