REVIEWS:

The artist dreams for the community, then tells and interprets those dreams and nightmares to expand our understanding of ourselves and our interactions. The artist shows us illuminated windows and doors, as in Matthew Cohen’s series of photographs called Adjacent Rooms, those places we wake up from and wonder why we have the feeling that we have just been through something important.

The migratory instinct is a powerful one. In 1955, photographer Robert Frank began a cross-country journey in search of the essence of American-ness for his project The Americans. Matthew Cohen’s large scale photograph Road Kill heeds the same call of the road, as a man standing in the foreground looks back at the long road he had just walked.

For my money, the best of the photographic work is Matt Cohen’s Morgue Job. This is a slice of film noir action with an eerie subtext. Cohen had created real atmosphere in this piece that wriggles the mind’s eye by conversely compressing and extending the depth of field.

Matt’s work is outstanding … each image is truly a cinematic moment. The best of this work reflects a sense of film noir, which is difficult to achieve without falling into cynicism.

Cohen's images are the most engaging in the show, sharing a quality common to all the work - an effective balance of narrative subject and photographic technique that affirms the medium's primacy at the same time as it deploys it serve the final image.
